The word hypnosis originates from the Greek word hypnos, which means sleep. Dr. James Braid, a Scottish physician and surgeon specializing in eye and muscular conditions, is regarded as the "Father of Modern Hypnotism." He used the term hypnotism as an abbreviation for the term "neuro-hypnotism," which is sleep of the nerves.
By entering a state of relaxation and quieting the nerves, an individual's subconscious may be accessed unfettered by his or her ego.
